“Certain areas of your SAP landscape need to be monitored on a regular basis to ensure reliable operation.”

– SAP Administration: Practical Guide, p. 269 Galileo Press 2011

According to SAP

Effective monitoring of your SAP system is CRITICAL

How valuable is your data?

Monitoring the physical infrastructure (the hardware) is a given. Monitoring the SAP application running on it is often neglected. But, which is more valuable, really? The spinning disks or the data?

But there is a dirty little secret!

Basis Administrators left to monitor manually, transaction by transaction, system by system, put monitoring aside to fight fires. Ironically, automated monitoring can prevent “fires” and free up resources to promote smooth operation of the SAP landscape.

1st Watch was developed with the help of Basis Administrators, for Basis Administrators. It was developed to relieve them from the burden and monotony of performing a critical task better left to computers. It helps them be proactive, rather than simply reactive; reporting issues after the fact.

We developed 1st Watch with the following core tenants.

The 1st Watch System will be:

“1st Watch Monitoring with 1st Basis problem resolution provides us the kind of safety net they talk about. They are great!”

Under the Hood

The 1st Watch system communicates with the customer’s SAP systems over a standard SAP connection called SAProuter. Configured as a Secure Network Communication (SNC) between SAProuters, a secure point-to-point connection is created. Once connected, 1st Watch collects SAP-specific data from certain systems, governed by SAProuter, related to Basis Critical checks and limited by role-based security.

To add Java System and Database (DB) monitoring, a collector is installed with a “phone-home” (outbound) connection over a Transport Layer Security (TLS) socket. The 1st Watch Collector enables the system to monitor Java System, DB, and portals within the customer’s SAP landscape. Historical and performance data are then available for analysis or reporting.
